The Evolution Of Braces

The Evolution Of Braces
Posted on 04/01/2016

When people think of braces, the first things that usually come to mind are the big metal appliances that encompass your entire head, as portrayed by Lisa Simpson in an episode over 20 years old.

Here at Checkoff & Casey Orthodontics, we want our patients to know that a lot has changed in orthodontic technology since then. These past 20 years have shown tremendous upgrades in the materials available to orthodontists and most people are not aware of it! Here is a list of just a few examples:

  1. Improvements in bonding to teeth have allowed the size of our materials to decrease from the big bands around your front teeth to much smaller brackets. An analogy to other technology could be how cell phones have evolved, from bulkier, larger models to slim and trim smartphones.

  3. Not interested in metal or wires? No problem! Advancements in the abilities of clear aligners now allow you to create a great smile while also having the luxury of removing your trays so that you can enjoy your favorite foods without the risk of breaking brackets.

  5. Some patients tell us that they are afraid of losing aligners or they know they will not wear them as regularly as is required to achieve a fantastic result. There is now a solution for that as well! Today’s orthodontists offer porcelain brackets that are much less visible than the traditional metal, but function in the same way.
