Posted on 11/30/2016

‘Tis the season to start making holidays plans which typically includes planning foods to share with family and friends. For those of you wearing braces that are bonded to your teeth, you may be wondering what foods you can enjoy during this festive time of the year. It is crucial not to eat foods that can damage or break your braces like hard, gooey and sticky foods. The last thing you want to do during the busy holiday season is to make an extra appointment with your orthodontist to have something fixed or replaced. Here are a few recipes you can make which are deemed braces-safe by your friendly Warminster orthodontist.

Cheesy Potato Pancakes

You can make these pancakes with all those leftover potatoes you don’t know what to do with.

Ingredients:

3 cups leftover mashed potatoes, chilled

2/3 cup cheddar cheese, shredded

1 egg, beaten

½ cup flour (plus 3 tablespoons)

2 tablespoons chopped scallions

sour cream for serving

Directions:

In large bowl, mix together the mashed potatoes, cheese, scallions, egg and the 3 tablespoons of flour. Use your hands to divide the mixture into twelve portions. Roll each portion into a ball then flatten each ball into a pancake that is about one-half inch thick.

Put the remaining ½ cup of flour in a shallow dish and dredge each pancake in the flour. In large frying pan over medium heat, heat up about 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Then fry the pancakes in batches until they’re brown and crispy on both sides, for about 3 to 4 minutes. Add more oil to the pan between batches. Serve with a dollop of sour cream on top and enjoy!
