Eight Things to Know Before Getting Invisalign

Eight Things to Know Before Getting Invisalign

Here at Checkoff & Casey Orthodontics, we know that Invisalign is a fantastic orthodontic treatment option for patients who want to fix crooked or misaligned teeth without sporting traditional braces. Here are a few things to know before getting Invisalign:

  1. Expect To Wear Your Aligners For At Least 22 Hours A Day

The recommended daily wear time is at least 22 hours. Aligners should remain on your teeth at all times except when eating and brushing. Make sure to wear them at night while sleeping as well!

  2. Take Them Out To Eat

Because the suggested wear time leaves only two hours to play with, you will want to eat during the time in which the aligners are out of your mouth. Make sure that you do not eat with them in! Keep in mind that it is recommended that you brush your teeth every time you have something to eat before putting your aligners back in.

  3. Additional Attachments Are Sometimes Necessary

Many patients considering Invisalign think aligners are the only equipment they will need for the process. Some often require multiple small attachments or ridges to keep aligners in place.

  4. Stains Can Happen

Invisalign aligners are virtually undetectable, but the small ridges or attachments that hold them in place are prone to staining. This is especially true when drinking coffee or wine, so be sure to brush afterward.

  5. Your Toothbrush Is Your Best Friend

Did we mention you would be brushing your teeth a lot? It is important to brush in the morning, at night, and after every meal to keep plaque buildup at bay. This will also minimize the risk of staining.

  6. Beverages

Although you can leave Invisalign in to drink liquids, be aware that extra hot beverages like tea and coffee can warp aligners. Stick to cold water or clear, sparkling water to prevent damage.

  7. Wait Until Treatment Is Finished For Whitening

Many patients elect to undergo whitening treatments after using Invisalign to lift any stains left by attachments. This is perfectly fine but can only happen after you are completely finished with treatment.

  8. Embrace The Refinement Process

After you are done with your initial set of aligners, expect to wear post-treatment refinement aligners to correct stubborn teeth and guarantee a fantastic result.
